W-4 calculator: additional amount to be withheld per paycheck (2026)

Sample take-home: $60,859.53 a year · $5,071.63 a month · $2,340.75 biweekly.

Tax year 2026, California, single, standard deduction, no 401(k).

Form W-4 step 4(c) is a dollar box: “Extra withholding” / additional amount to be withheld each paycheck. It is not a tax rate and not the same as claiming dependents. Type that extra in the calculator. Cash take-home falls by about that amount each period; the annual federal liability sketch still comes from brackets — you are simply sending more to the IRS during the year.

Step 4(c) is an additional flat dollar amount per paycheck. Dependents (and other Step 3 credits) reduce withholding by estimating credits on the return; they are not a substitute for typing $50 in 4(c). Multiple jobs or a working spouse usually belong in Step 2 (checkbox or worksheet), not as a guess in 4(c). This page only models the extra dollar line.

Summer, seasonal, and part-year work matter. If you only receive 12 biweekly checks instead of 26, $50 extra per check is $600 for the year, not $1,300. The engine still annualizes as if the pay pattern runs all year — so for a short assignment, scale the extra yourself (target annual cushion ÷ remaining checks) rather than copying a full-year tip.

Worked example: $80,000 California, single, biweekly, no 401(k). With $0 extra, engine take-home is about $60,859.53 a year (~$2,340.75 per check). With $50 extra withholding per paycheck, annual cash falls by $1,300 to about $59,559.53 (~$2,290.75 per check). State tax and FICA are unchanged by this federal extra field.

People use extra withholding for a side gig, a spouse’s under-withheld job, or to avoid an April balance due. This page does not pick the “correct” extra — it shows what a chosen amount does to each check. Reviewed October 2, 2026.

FAQ

How much should I withhold on my W-4?

This page does not pick the “correct” extra. Type a dollar amount for Form W-4 step 4(c) and see each check. For a second job, people use extra withholding or the W-4 step 2 checkbox (not modeled here).

Is step 4(c) the same as dependents?

No. Dependents and Step 3 credits change estimated credits. Step 4(c) is a flat extra dollar amount per paycheck on top of the computed withholding.

Per paycheck or per year?

The field is dollars per paycheck. Annual extra is that amount times the number of periods you actually receive (26 if biweekly all year).
