In 2026 the federal standard deduction is $32,200 for married filing jointly and $16,100 for married filing separately. Joint brackets are wider. Additional Medicare (0.9%) starts at $250,000 of FICA wages for MFJ and at $125,000 for MFS, so neither threshold hits this $80,000 sample.

The calculator starts on married filing jointly. Switch to married filing separately to see the same one-income California wage under MFS tables. A spouse’s separate wages are not entered; two-earner couples should raise gross or run two tabs. This is not a Form 1040 and not filing advice.

Use the dedicated MFJ and MFS pages when you want each status preloaded alone, or married vs single when the contrast is single against joint. Reviewed October 2, 2026.

Why does MFS look closer to single?
