Sample take-home: $60,859.58 a year · $5,071.63 a month · $2,340.75 biweekly.

Tax year 2026, California, married filing separately, standard deduction, no 401(k).

This page starts already on MFS. It is not the married-versus-single comparison and not the married-filing-jointly landing page.

One $80,000 wage, MFS, California. A spouse’s separate return is not entered. MFS is often used when spouses do not want to combine returns. It is not automatically “better” or “worse” than joint on every fact pattern. This site does not model the Child Tax Credit, itemized-deduction limits that can apply to MFS, or community-property splits.

Additional Medicare for MFS starts at $125,000, so it does not appear on this $80,000 sample. Joint filers see that extra 0.9% only above $250,000. California uses separate-style tables in this engine when status is MFS.

FAQ

Is MFS the same as single?

No. The 2026 federal standard deduction happens to be $16,100 for both, but brackets, additional Medicare ($125,000), and some credits differ.

How is this different from the MFJ page?

That URL preloads married filing jointly and the $32,200 joint standard deduction. This URL preloads married filing separately.

Should I file MFS?

We do not say. Run the number on this page, then confirm with a tax preparer. Paycheck withholding is not a Form 1040.
