On $80,000, biweekly gross is about $3,077 a check ($80,000 ÷ 26). Semimonthly gross is about $3,333 ($80,000 ÷ 24). Annual federal, FICA, and California tax should land close if hours stay flat. The cash in each envelope is different because the year is sliced 26 ways or 24.
HR sometimes labels both “twice a month.” If you get 26 checks, including the occasional three-check month, you are biweekly. If you get 24, stay on semimonthly. This engine annualizes, then splits. It does not model 1st-and-15th calendar quirks or unpaid weeks.
